Hey, prospective grad student! We are hiring! If you are interested, please follow the procedure below:

  1. Prepare your application materials for either Rice ECE or Rice APP.
  2. Mention the Naik group in the application and your statement.
  3. Submit your application and let Prof. Naik know that you have applied. Please share your application number.
  4. After the admission committee reviews your application and shortlists it, Prof.Naik will be able to read your application material. He will contact you by the end of January or early February for a meeting. Please look forward to an email from him then.

Some tips for preparing your application materials:

  • The three P’s of PhD are Problem-solving, Perseverance, and Patience. Faculty look for pieces of evidence that prove you possess these three qualities.
  • Problem-solving: GPA, reputation of your institution, co-curricular activities (projects, research participation, competitive exams…), and GRE score are some of the metrics used here.
  • Perseverance and Patience: They are hard to assess from transcripts. Letters do matter the most here. Mention any past research experience and its impact on your personality and career goals in your statement. Publications are great but are not always the best markers. If you have publications listed, please mention what your contribution was in your statement.
  • If you have any special situation, (e.g., a study break, unaccounted time on your resume, a missing letter from your research adviser, etc.), please explain it in your statement.
  • Impress the admission committee by showing them that you have done your homework. Customize your application materials to the place your are applying by mentioning the names of groups you are interested in, highlighting thier research work, and connecting it to your research/career goals.
